A ‘broken-plan’ living space with SF22 sliding partitions

This rear extension project is a perfect example of how modern glazing can redefine open-plan living. Designed around a stylish new kitchen, the space was originally conceived as a fully open environment, combining cooking, dining and living space into one continuous area. While visually impressive, the homeowners found that day-to-day living called for a more flexible approach – one that could balance openness with control.

IDSystems advice and expertise

Having installed French doors and windows to the extension they returned to IDSystems for ideas on how to achieve this – the solution was the SF22 sliding glass partitions, creating what is often referred to as a ‘broken-plan’ layout. This approach retains the light, spacious feel of open-plan design while allowing different areas of the home to function independently when required. In this case, the kitchen could be separated from the living space, helping to contain noise and cooking smells without losing the visual connection.

Art Deco style adds design feature

The choice of an Art Deco-inspired design adds a strong architectural feature to the interior. The slim aluminium frames and glazing bars match the look of a traditional forged steel glazed screen to create a striking grid effect that complements the clean lines and contemporary finishes of the kitchen. Rather than feeling like a division, the partitions enhance the overall design, becoming a central feature of the space.

A key detail in this installation is the completely flush floor track, which has been recessed into the flooring. This ensures a seamless transition between the kitchen and living areas, with no step or threshold to interrupt the flow of the space. The result is not only visually cleaner but also more practical for everyday living.

Broken plan living space

When the homeowners want to return to a fully open-plan layout, the panels can be effortlessly slid to either side. This flexibility allows the space to adapt throughout the day, open and sociable when entertaining, or more contained and relaxed when needed.

The finished result is a carefully balanced interior that delivers both style and functionality. By introducing sliding glass partitions, the homeowners have transformed their extension into a space that works intuitively around their lifestyle, proving that open-plan living doesn’t have to mean compromising on comfort.
