Picture window FAQs
What is the difference between a picture window and a standard window?
A picture window is a fixed frame window that does not open. Because there is no need for opening hardware or sashes, the frames are significantly slimmer, allowing for much larger glass panes that "frame" a view like a piece of art.
How secure are large fixed windows?
Our windows meet the highest security standards and the aluminium system, theVISION holds the BSI Kitemark™ certificate having passed rigorous PAS 24 independent security testing. For added reassurance, laminated safety glass can be used. This holds the fragments together should the glass ever be broken,
enhancing even further the security protection provided.
What is the maximum size of a fixed frame window?
With our innovative glazing systems, "fixed" doesn't mean "small." Using high-strength aluminium, our picture window frames can hold expansive panes of glass. While individual configurations vary, a single pane of glass can reach up to 4 metres wide by 4 metres tall, provided there is suitable site access for installation. For even larger apertures, we can combine products together to create a complete glazing solution.
Do I need planning permission for a picture window?
If you are simply replacing an existing window with a picture window of the same size, you generally do not need planning permission under Permitted Development rights in the UK. However, you may need permission if:
- You are creating a brand-new opening in a wall.
- The window is on the side of the house and is not obscured (frosted) or is an upper-floor opening window.
- Your home is a Listed Building or located in a Conservation Area.
- The window is so large it is classed as a structural change or extension.
Can picture windows have openings?
By definition, a picture window is "fixed" (non-opening) to provide the slimmest possible frame and an unobstructed view. If you require ventilation, a composite window can be incorporated into the design, where a fixed picture pane is paired with opening casement windows, or a slimline vent is integrated into the frame.
Can you incorporate window seats with picture windows?
Absolutely. Because picture windows are fixed (meaning they don’t open), the large, uninterrupted panes of glass provide the ideal framing for a window seat with a stunning view, or the perfect sun-soaked reading spot.
Is a picture window the same as an Oriel window?
No, whilst both types of windows typically feature a large central pane of glass, Oriel windows are glass box structures which extend beyond the external wall and picture windows sit inside an opening formed within the wall. Our Oriel windows feature glass-to-glass joints to maximise the amount of light, for a modern interpretation of the classic bay window.
