With a growing family, the homeowners of this 1960s bungalow wanted to extend their home to create a bright, open-plan space that could be enjoyed every day. The vision was simple but ambitious: a communal area where cooking, relaxing and family life could flow naturally, with a strong connection between indoors and outdoors.
“We wanted a space where we could sit, cook and just enjoy being together as a family. Somewhere our little boy could run in and out, and where everything felt open and connected.”
Design inspiration came online especially Pinterest and Instagram, with a clear desire for a modern kitchen, a generous island and a spacious open-plan layout. A strong indoor-outdoor feel was central to the design, influencing both the layout of the extension and the choice of doors.
“I’ve always had that desire to have a nice kitchen with an island and an open-plan feel. I spent so many hours just scrolling through pictures picking up inspiration from what I liked and what we thought would work with our space and it was so helpful, not just for the big decisions like colours and layouts but also for the little finishing touches.”
When it came to glazing, the homeowners considered both bifold doors and sliding doors. Ultimately, sliding doors proved to be the perfect solution for maximising openness and creating uninterrupted views. The doors were a key element of the design, carefully positioned on both sides of the extension to pull in light throughout the day and to allow the inside space to flow effortlessly onto the patio.
“Our doors were really important to us. We spent a lot of time researching the different systems because we wanted to create a space so you could walk around and it feels like you’re outside when you’re in. Cooking, eating, relaxing – it all just flows together.”
The result is a seamless transition between the interior and exterior, with the patio acting as a natural extension of the living space. The homeowners opted for the Grand Slider II system with the profile matching the windows frames and the structure of the extension”
“We looked at theEDGE2.0 but actually what was interesting was when we looked at how the doors fitted with the extension as a whole, we’ve got so much glass that we didn’t necessarily need the really slim frames, for some reason the slightly wider profiles just seems to really fit the exposed beams and feel of the room – plus they spend so much time open during the summer that kind of made the decision for us.”
The extension has completely transformed how the family uses their home. The new space has become the heart of the house, used from morning to night.
“We live in here. We do everything in this space. From the moment we wake up, we’re in here.”
In the summer months, the sliding doors are left open, filling the room with fresh air and natural light and creating a space that is perfect for entertaining.
“The doors are always open when it’s sunny. It’s just a lovely atmosphere especially when we have family and friends round – it is just such a usable space and it has completed changed how much time we spend outside as well.”
