West London home returned to former glory

Tucked away on a quiet road in bustling Shepherd’s Bush and originally built in 1873, this Grade II listed Victorian townhouse had unsympathetically been subdivided into flats in the middle of the last century, leaving small, compartmentalised rooms and living spaces that lacked any natural light.

The new owners saw the opportunity to restore the house to its former glory, engaging Maxwell & Company to re-configure the house back to a single dwelling, adding an extension to the rear of the house complete with glass second storey addition that helps to draw light deeper into the rooms of the existing house.

On the ground floor the L-shaped extension creates space for a large open plan family living space that is connected to the tiled patio garden by SF75eco bifold doors. The 3-panel set completely opens up to extend the living space outside, with a low-threshold track providing an almost seamless transition between inside and out.

On the return beside the bifold doors an Oriel window was chosen to provide a style window seat solution, creating the perfect spot to sit and watch the outside and greater enhance the connection between home and garden.

At first floor level an innovative solution was required. Restricted by planning that meant that a brick structure would not be permissible, the architects instead designed a glass box addition that not only helps draw light into the existing rooms and down to the ground floor, it also enables the incorporation of a second set of stairs in the extension that significantly enhance the flow through the house.

To achieve the glass box design IDSystems worked closely with the architects to design, manufacture a lean-to glass roof that sits atop of fixed frame windows with a full height tilt and turn window allowing ventilation to the space. A frameless glass balustrade acts as a bannister beside the stairs, maintaining the open feel and light levels whilst a walk-on rooflight allows the light to reach the ground floor.
