Contemporary addition to 1930s North London home

This 1930s family home on the edge of North London has been given a new lease of life thanks to a complete renovation and extension project featuring a large 6-panel set of vistaline slide and turn doors that connect the open plan kitchen with large garden.

The structure and layout of the house had remained almost untouched for more than 80 years before the current owners bought the house and set about reimagining the spaces to suit a more modern way of living.

Key to achieving the goal for a bright, open living space was the addition of a single-storey extension that extends across the entire width of the rear elevation. Measuring in at just less than 5m deep, the flat-roof extension allowed the back of the house to be completely restructured and the traditional kitchen replaced with a huge open-plan design including a large island.

Above the dining table two large flat roof lights fill the room full of light, drawing brightness deeper into the structure of the existing house, whilst across the rear elevation a 6-panel set of vistaline slide and turn doors offer the perfect compromise between bifold doors and sliding doors.

We looked at sliding doors and for a long time they were our preferred option, however when IDSystems recommended the vistaline system we knew it was perfect for what we wanted. We love having friends over and being able to open the doors all the way up and really extend our home out on the patio helps create the perfect spot for entertaining.

When closed the narrow frames of the vistaline system help to perfectly frame the views of the large garden and woodland beyond, yet have the ability for the panels to slide and stack to one end of the aperture to create a completely unobstructed opening.

To complement the 1930s style of the house a set of Art Deco inspired heritage French doors with sidelights are installed on the side elevation of the extension, whilst the ground floor also benefits from full-height aluminium fixed frame and tilt & turn windows that match the contemporary style of the vistaline doors.
