Set directly on the shoreline at Pevensey Bay, this beachfront home has been completely remodelled and reimagined to make the most of its exceptional coastal setting. The brief was clear: transform an existing property into a contemporary, light-filled home with uninterrupted views of the sea and a seamless connection between inside and out – all just a stone’s throw from the sea.
Designed by Meloy Architecture and Design, the renovation stripped the house back and added a larger first floor accommodation. The reconfigured layout enabled the creation of a generous open-plan living space across the ground floor. Living, dining and kitchen spaces now flow effortlessly towards the beach, with wide openings framing the ever-changing seascape.
Externally, timber cladding was introduced to give the property a warm, modern aesthetic while sitting comfortably alongside neighbouring beach homes. The natural tones of the timber complement the coastal surroundings and contrast beautifully with the slim, contemporary aluminium frames of the glazing.
Given the exposed beachfront location, the glazing specification was critical. The homeowners wanted minimal visual interruption, high performance and doors that could withstand the demands of a coastal environment.
theEDGE2.0 sliding door system was selected for its clean, contemporary aesthetic that suits the modern architecture of the reimagined house, whilst the ultra-slim aluminium frames allow for maximum glass area and the doors also benefit from excellent thermal performance and weather resistance.
On the ground floor the large sliding panels span the full width of the rear elevation, opening the home directly onto the timber deck and beach beyond. When closed, the expansive glazing still maintains a strong visual connection to the sea; when open, the boundary between interior and exterior virtually disappears.
Inside, the impact of the glazing is immediate. Entering from the front door natural light floods deep into the home throughout the day, with cleverly placed clerestory windows set back from the rear elevation pulls light deeper into the existing structure. Views of the beach and sea become a constant backdrop to everyday living – whether relaxing in the lounge, cooking in the kitchen or entertaining guests.
Upstairs, a fourth set of doors, complete with frameless glass balustrade acting as a Juliet balcony, continues the theme of maximising light and views, ensuring the coastal setting is experienced throughout the property.
This Pevensey Bay renovation is a clear example of how high-performance glazing can redefine a home. By combining contemporary design, natural materials and IDSystems’ theEDGE2.0 sliding doors, the project delivers a refined yet relaxed beachfront home that feels open, light and completely connected to its surroundings.
